The Gnu project was set up to develop an open source operating system which was free. Primarily devised by Richard Stallman, it has been largely successful, resulting in the development of Linux and also Gnu Hurd.
Dr Luc Montagnier publishes a discovery in France of a virus that is later given the name HIV.
Dr Robert Gallow announces that the CDC has found a virus which they are certain causes AIDS. It may or may not be the same as the one. It later turns out to be the same one.
However the announcement was Highly Disreputable, as it is a political announcement in advance of publication and peer review in order to prevent the closure of large parts of the CDC.
The Actor David Niven died this year.
