Front Page /// Posix Compatable Operating Systems /// Site Index
Gnu Hurd is the unix-like kernel provided by the Free Software Foundation. Started back in 1987, this kernel has a long and troubled history, which is now (with the release of the Debian G1 binary cd's) starting to settle down into a stable and usable Posix compatable operating system.
Based around the mach micro-kernel, with lots of servers sitting between it and the user, this system is designed to be fast, stable, and very extensible.
It was the delay in getting this kernel into usable form combined with the split in free bsd versions which is responsible for linux having such a hold over the free unix operating system market.
