When Isambard Kingdom Brunel was appointed as Chief Engineer of the Great Western Railway in 1833, he analyzed the problems with the "narrow guage (4 foot 8.5 inches)" and decided on a "broad guage (7 foot 0.25 inches)". This caused the "guage wars" which continued until this year.
