Isambard Kingdom Brunel was appointed as Chief Engineer of the Great Western Railway. After analyzing the problems with the "narrow guage (4 foot 8.5 inches)" he decided on a "broad guage (7 foot 0.25 inches)". This caused the "guage wars" which lasted until 1892.
