Programming under Unix

Under Unix or Linux there are a whole host of ways of programming the system to do what you want. There are a large number of shells, each of which has it's own scripting language.

Then there are a large number of general purpose scripting languages, which are not tied to any particular shell. These include Awk, Expect, Perl and Python.

And of course you can always use a general purpose programming language, which include C, C++, pascal, fortran, cobol, modula 2 (or 3), scheme, prolog, lisp, basic, forth, ada and many others.
