Unix integrated Desktop Environments

If using a graphical user interface (GUI) wasn't good enough, you can go even further and have an Integrated Desktop Environment (or IDE for short). Using Microsoft again, it is like deciding that you need more than the ordinary desktop, and activating the active desktop. As you have probably guessed, Unix and Linux have more than one, most notable are KDE and GNOME. Programs have to be written specifically to take advantage of these, but you will be pleased to know, there are some runtime libraries available so that you can run gnome programs in kde, kde programs in gnome or programs for either in one of the other environments available.
