Trademarks are a form of intellectual property. The most obvious example is the Microsoft Windows symbol, but the term Microsoft Windows is also an example of a trademark.

There is a problem at the moment with large (typically US) companies registering trademarks in the US without checking if they are registered anywhere else, and then using their size, US trademark, and the incredibly biased US court system to remove "dot com" Internet domains from existing, but smaller and non-US longstanding trademark holders.

You can do an online check on US trademarks and on British trademarks
