Wilhelm Beer and Johann Heinrich von Madler started to make the observations (concluded in 1839) which allowed them to produce the first map of mars in 1840.
On 15th september, the Liverpool to Manchester railway had it's grand opening.
During a water stop, when everyone was supposed to stay in their carriage, but almost nobody did, William Huskisson, the MP for Liverpool and a major railway advocate had an accident in which he got run over by "The Rocket", and he eventually died from the injury.
He became the first railway accident fatality, with the company denying responsibility, but errecting a monument which is still there today. Simon Garfield has written a book about these events.
